This is exactly the problem with science reporting. All things can go wrong like click bait, out of context conclusions etc will go wrong.

I hate Canvas. I would rather run a course on GitHub. But our university forces it on us. And now this.

Do you remember how Canvas was a gigantic improvement over Blackboard?

And GitHub doesn't provide a way to record grades that remain private per student last I checked, much less sync them to the university, or 99% of other things Canvas does.

I don't love Canvas, but it's far, far preferable to a world without it.

It is really convenient and stays out of the way. As much as I'm enjoying the mess, I am forced to appreciate its value.

> remain private per student last I checked

last I checked it appears grades remain private per planet or so ...

How does Canvas compare to things like Moodle?

Or is it an entirely different class of beast?

I've written a bunch of LMS integrations so I've had the opportunity to use all of the major LMSs. Basically, all LMS systems are rather user unfriendly and complicated with a ton of customization options hidden under layers of sub-menus/configuration settings. At their core they provide a grade book, student management tools, and some basic CMS type functionality for posting class messages/coursework/etc. They've all adopted a standard for interacting with external tools (LTI).

Canvas generally is the 'easiest' to use, and the 'cleanest' looking one although D2L Brightspace is pretty good too. Moodle out of the box is pretty confusing and ugly, but I've seen some heavily customized instances that look a lot better. Blackboard is the worst of the bunch IMO.

Wow, I last used Moodle in 7th grade, 2008. It seemed like a similar thing.

> Expecting bike riders to follow traffic laws is also unrealistic.

Can you cite the research to back up your claim? Because I have the research claiming the opposite the cyclists are more compliant with traffic rules than cars [0]. Including in US [1]

So we need bankid to use social media? I have to move.

For what it’s worth I heard from a manager in Meta that they are doing this too.

A lot of people go to sauna after workout. I rarely go to sauna without workout so not sure if the combination is helping me or exercise or the sauna. How to control for that?

You are replying to a comment that said they log and control for time of activity.

Where is the mighty AI when you need one.

From what I heard Meta is spending hundreds of millions each month in Claude credits for developers. So that’s a huge saving if they have own models that match Opus.

Spending tons of money on Claude and the recent token benchmarks came WELL after Meta's huge investments in compute infrastructure for AI as well as the long history of language model development inside science divisions at the company.

I have to create meta account to access. No thanks.

Why does it sometimes ask when connecting a HDMI projector?

Many projectors include remotes that allow you to control a slide presentation. These remotes send the default keystrokes that Microsoft PowerPoint knows (and which other presentation software copied) So when you connect a projector the OS often sees a keyboard and mouse. This triggers macOS’s keyboard recognition tool. Old VGA projectors had separate keyboard/mouse ports. I assume HDMI has a USB channel?

> I assume HDMI has a USB channel?

No, it doesn't, it only has I2C (for display identification and control, same as VGA and DVI) and CEC (for remote control).
