Yes, I noticed that that's why I said if you live the Japanese way you can save some money. So I am aware.

You are right that most people here live and raise kids in smaller apartments. But just because this is the status quo and you don't 'need' more I wouldn't say it's good. Why should your kid have to live in a 5sqm room? I wouldn't be able to justify that for myself and would have to move outside.
I think it's the mentality here, singles, for example, spend most time at work or similar so they don't mind having a tiny, affordable home. Also most Japanese (there are exceptions) normally don't invite many people to their home etc.
