"verify" vs. "totally up to me" are different things.
This is important to validate the review was left by a genuine customer.
You can indeed share as much (or as little) information as you want, but they'll have to decided on the balance of probabilities if you had a real interaction with the company you're reviewing.
We receive many reviews and often fake negative reviews, so this helps to provide at least a level of protection against such attacks.
