A better reason to downvote that comment (which I didn't do) is that the performance of important cryptosystems is limited by MD5, SHA1, and RC4 performance. Cryptosystems like, say, TLS.

Fun fact, by the way: there aren't any practical attacks on HMAC-MD5.
